卷五 四、「時事畫」四十五幅


  (七月十二日)

  偶檢舊篋,得年來所藏各報之《諷刺畫》(諷刺之名殊不當,以其不專事諷刺也),即「時事畫」(Cartoon),展玩數四,不忍棄去,擇其佳者附載於是冊,而弁以序曰:

  西國報章多有「時事畫」一欄,聘名手主之。其所畫或諷刺時政,或褒貶人物,幾於不著一字而利如鋒霜,爽如哀梨,能令人喜,亦能令人歎息,其為畫也,蓋自成一種美術。歐美二洲以此藝著者無數,而其真能獨樹一幟自成宗派者,則亦複寥落無幾。蓋其為畫也,亦猶為文然,貴以神勝,以意勝者次之;其但紀事實,炫技巧,供讀者一笑而已者,不足尚也。歐陸諸國之名作吾所見殊少,不敢妄為月旦。今所選多英美兩國之作,于美得駱賓生(Boardman Robinson)及漫諾(Minor)二家,于英得《彭箕報》( Punch)之作者,皆為此道上乘,故首列此三家。其稍遜者及大陸南美諸邦之作者,亦擇尤附焉。抑吾之為此集,初不徒以自娛也,誠以此藝之在吾國,乃未有作者,區區之懷,將以之紹介於國人,俾後之作者有所觀感取法焉,亦採風問俗者所有責也。

  第一集 駱賓生氏

  (1)前年Titanic舟與冰山相觸,沉于大西洋,死者無數,駱氏作此圖哀之。寫鄉間老父母翻看報紙,尋其兒女存亡消息,題為《單上無名》,用意最深刻動人。此何啻一篇萬言哀辭,真絕作也!

  (2)勞動工人籲天圖,為英國煤礦工人罷工者作。

  (3)刺英國暴烈派之女權黨,屢用暴烈方法,自毀其運動。

  (4)一九一二[年]之大選舉。白來恩問:「喂,省長先生,我們民主黨總統不得連任的政綱怎麼樣了?」威爾遜說:「啊!你瞧,天氣真清朗呀!」

  (5)同上題。圖左角日曆為「十一月二日」,離大選舉只有兩天了。威爾遜還在躊躇說:「讓我想想看。對於進口稅的問題,什麼態度最穩妥呢?」駱氏為共和黨機關報 New York Tribune作畫,故反對威爾遜,然其言何婉而雅也!

  (6)選舉之結果,民主黨全勝,共和黨大敗,駱氏於揭曉之晨作此畫,寫「申叔」(Uncle Sam,代表美國)早起看報,微笑道:「啊!也罷!我想,四個年頭我還受得了。」此種風趣又可見西洋政爭之態度非東方政客所能夢見。

  (7)英儒勃來思(著《民主政治》者)為英使美,美人敬愛之。氏以老辭職,將去美,駱氏為作此。

  (8)巴爾幹風雲之結果。「快要開談判了。」

  (9)紐約省長色爾叟在演說臺上大聲說:「我色爾叟不服侍別的老闆,只有色爾叟自己!」他的身背後站著紐約民主黨的後臺老闆(Boss)茂肥用指頭點他道:「你的獨奏唱完了,就上樓來。」此稍近於虐謔矣。然何其妙也!(參看卷三第一四則)

  (10)紐約工廠有童稚工人,晨四時即動工,夜深始出者。駱氏為作此。右所載十圖皆駱氏所作。

  第二集 漫諾氏

  (11)為罷工之礦工作也。

  (12)中國人之新神像:為中國革命作。圖為一中國人手持自由之神,審視把玩。此圖出,各國爭轉載之,漫氏之名遂大著。

  (13)未有己不正而能正人者。(參看卷三第一四則)虎視者為茂肥(Murphy)。伏地者紐約省長Sulzer也。

  (14)威爾遜宣言不用金圓外交政策。

  第三集 《彭箕報》之時事畫(英倫)

  (15)武裝和平。(一)

  (16)巴爾幹戰後之風雲再起矣。

  (17)突厥人乘巴爾幹諸國互鬥,複得亞得裡亞堡,列強雖惡之,而無如何也。

  (18)「少年突厥党」之失敗。突之武人党不能逞志於意大利,乃逞志于「少年党」,故刺之。

  (19)威爾遜之墨西哥政策。不羈之馬,圉人苦矣。

  (20)武裝和平。(二)

  第四集 英倫他種報章之時事畫

  (21)死神之大捷。(《泊馬報》)

  (22)紙上之和平。(《星報》)

  (23)武裝和平。(三)

  第五集 大陸諸國之時事畫

  (24)德國社會黨之大捷。一九一二年,社會黨員在下議院得大多數,其人大半多工人貧民也。一人問:「你在卑田院裡嗎?」一人答:「不是的;我在國會裡。」

  (25)中國之自由神。此圖疑本於漫氏之作,何其相似也!

  (26)德皇與羅斯福,兩人皆持帝國主義者也。

  (27)意突之戰。《馬太傳》二章曰:「耶穌生時,有東方高士遠來造耶路撒冷,言曰:『猶太人之王何在耶?吾曹在東方見其星矣,今遠來瞻拜之。』耶穌所生地名貝司倫(Bethlehen),諸高士循星所指,得其處。入門,見媚利抱耶穌,則皆伏地膜拜頂禮,解囊獻黃金名香為禮,歡忭而去。」此圖即用此事以諷耶教徒之不重人道而逞兵于回教之國也。圖中寫意人攻擊特利波裡正急,空中一彈飛起,其下回教徒見之,相謂曰,此豈貝司倫之星也?

  (28)德人眼中之羅斯福、塔夫脫選舉決鬥。

  (29)小狗吠巨靈。德之社會黨首領貝北爾新死,世界爭稱頌其人,獨守舊黨之《郵報》詆之。

  (30)羅斯福、塔夫脫之決鬥。

  (31)世界共和國歡迎新中國之圖。此圖亦極有名,世界爭載之。

  (32)突厥之運命。問卜者曰:「不久可以有和平了嗎?」蔔者答:「我只見一個『三』,但看不准是三天、三月、三年,或是三百年。」

  (33)俄人對突厥之同情。

  (34)補月圖。新月為突之國徽,即金甌之意。

  (35)一年外交之失敗(一九一二)。

  (36)墨西哥人之自負。

  第六集 第二流之美國「時事畫」

  (37)此亦吊「Titanic」舟之慘劫也。

  (38)同題,參觀第一圖。「Titanic」為海行第一大舟,自負為不沉。

  (39)羅斯福之趨時。此為一九一二年大選時期時事畫之最佳者。羅斯福組織進步黨,《黨綱》中包羅一切最時髦之主張。此圖畫一個冰淇淋店的櫃檯,後面是各種果汁瓶,寫著「勞工權利」、「罷免法官」、「女子參政」(中間);「統治托拉斯」、「創制權與複決權」、「社會主義」、「保護天然富源」(左);「覆議法庭判決」、「委員制之市政」、「人口問題」(右),真是「應有盡有」了,羅氏問櫃檯外的顧客道:「您要什麼?」

  右時事畫卅九,皆生平所見之最佳者。七月十一日適之記。

  今日審視昨夜所棄之時事畫,覺不無滄海遺珠之憾,遂增入若干,成續集。

  (40)駱賓生氏作。美國近年頗主解散大托拉斯或嚴取締之。有許多托拉斯已自行解散。此記貝爾及西盟兩電業公司自行解散一案也。

  (41)《臣門如市》。此邦大托拉斯往往以金錢收買官吏議員為之作走狗。此指美孚公司也。漫諾氏作。

  (42)英人Sir John Tenniel作。此君為《彭箕》作畫凡五十年,去年始死,年九十四。此為此君最後之作。作於二十世紀開幕之第二日,祝新世紀(手中嬰孩)之和平也。車上武士為戰神,老人為時神(Time)手抱二十世紀,其旁立,和平之神也。

  (43)「門羅主義」之受福者。墨之亂,美人不許歐人干涉,而美人私助微耶之黨,輸入軍械。此圖寫微耶獻花們羅之墓,所以志謝也。

  (44)意突之戰,消息隔絕,兩國報章各自言大捷,皆閉門造新聞者也。(法國《笑報》)

  (45)《樂觀者》。此圖似嘲似譽,極有風致;不知何氏所作。

  右所集時事畫四十五幅,計美人所作者二十幅,英十一,德六,荷二,奧二,意、法、墨各一。十二日適之又記。
